Agrigento is over all known for its "Valley of Temples". Can you recognize any of them in the picture?
The representation on this plate is the so called "Trinacria", the symbol of Sicily.
The Goddess Medusa got her hair turned into snakes as a punishment. Whoever looked at her became a stone. Sicilians made out of the snakes three legs, symbolizing the three corners of the island.
Of course there is much more in the archeological museum.
Let's start with the greek temples! The names are just a convention and were given much later. This one, "Tempio della Concordia", is one of the most intact of the world. The reason is that it was used as a church untill the 18th century.

"Tempio di Giunone Lacinia (Juno Lacinia)". Nice view from there.

The most beautifull thing about the temples is that they really fit into the scenery as if they would be a natural part of it.
Temple of Heracle. Again the names are just a convention and were given later by researchers.
"Telamone". This lying statue is about 3m long. It is situated next to the ruins of the biggest greek temple, the temple of Jove.
The temple of the dark Gods "Dioscuri" is the emblem of Agrigento. I also used it as the background of this and the following page.
After a refreshing swim in "Lido San Leone" I was ready for some night-shots. Temple of Heracle first.
Tempio della Concordia.
Tempio di Giunone Lacinia on the top of the hill.
Tempio di Ercole with the moon.
"Meglio sole che male accompagnate." I will explain you this game of words in a sicilian advertisment.
Even in the old town there are some interesting things to visit. For example the cathedral with its woodden roof of 1518.
One recognizes again the Norman style.
This little very nice church is founded on the fundaments of a greek temple.
